Betawiki is a project that provides a native platform for the localisation of MediaWiki and the MediaWiki extensions. It has been really effective in helping the usability of MediaWiki along. Betawiki is an initiative of Niklas Laxström aka Nikerabbit.

Some of the accomplishments of Betawiki:

  • The most relevant messages for MediaWiki are identified
  • The extensions that are used by the Wikimedia Foundation are identified
  • Support for "gettext" or ".po" files is given enabling the use of the tools used by professional translators.
  • A clean user interface that is localised like everything else
  • Great statistics that show the progress of the localisation efforts
  • Continuous commits of the work done into the MediaWiki SVN
  • A helpful atmosphere that has brought many more extensions into Betawiki
  • Many improvements in the way grammar can be supported
  • Pointers are given about the use of the MediaWiki messages
