Grants

From Open Progress

Open Progress has on occasion been given money to do specific tasks for a specific amount of money. There are two reasons why we are asked to do this.

  • We are asked to perform something because this is what a person or an organisation wants to see done. Typically these tasks are in line with what we would like to do ourselves. It may be that this funding changes the order in which things are done.
  • We have asked for a grant of money to perform a task that we think is important.

An example of the first is our programming of the authorised database functionality. This is a feature that is really important because it is a perfect tool for the cooperation with other organisations. In a perfect world we might have developed this at a later stage.

An example of the second is the programming of the Wiki read, Wiki write functionality. This is a tool that allows a translator to directly read a MediaWiki article and load it in the OmegaT computer aided translation tool. This functionality will be of immense use of translators. As Sabine is a translator and has on occasion done a lot of work for the Wikimedia Foundation it is something we felt strongly about and were happy to receive funding for this from Hivos
